Prior to the financial crisis that hit Asia in the late 1990s, the automation industry in Singapore experienced the shift of relocating the mass production lines to labour cost-efficient countries. 

​

Mr Tong, who was then an operator in the automation industry was compelled to seek employment in other industries to make ends meet, with the necessity to transform his skillsets.

​

After years in the air-con servicing and repair industry,  Mr Tong saw a similar becoming as to what happened to the automation industry - the shift of labour cost-efficiency to favour foreign workers. This did not bode well for Mr Tong again and this critically strucked  him to reflect on his job stability and future plans ahead.

​

From his fair share of experience in the industry at that point of time, he has found the industry to be lacking of the following due to the shift of the labour cost-efficiency environment:

- Technicality & Innovation

- Stellar Customer Service

- Responsbility

The lacking of the above features will necessarily mean that services rendered will be inferior, knowledge and assignment on electrical parts will be sub-par, which will result in more complaints, less time effiency, less referral and most importantly sustainability in the long run.

​

In 1992, Mr Tong took a leap of faith to set up Decom Air-con Engineering Service Pte Ltd on the establishment on his above beliefs.

 

While maintaining a small team of 3 in the difficult industry, he painstakenly maintained his belief of having a highly technical workforce as one of the key to being relevant in the industry. As such, besides intensive hands-on training on skillset by Mr Tong himself, the technicians were constantly sent to institutions such as BCA for updates on tehnical skills.

Mr Tong also maintained a steady customer base through tailored needs-based servicing techniques which greatly enhances the customer service relationship.

​

Today, Decom prides itself on it's stellar achievement of a steady database of 17+ year old clients, still relentlessly striving towards the very beliefs that made the company 20 years ago.
